you're gonna wanna be high for this one
Cyborg was a 1973 album by Klaus Schulze released in Germany. he played with Tangerine Dream for a while before he split for a solo career and ended up recording this piece. Comprised of 4 suites composed on multiple synthesizers and other assorted electronic effects, it’s the soundtrack to something like this: but that’s underselling it. I’m a sucker for this kind of stuff...

false estate
this record seems to be getting much hype. unfortunately I’m not impressed. they take cues from a lot of bands/sounds that I’m into but they don’t do it as well and so I’m left to wonder what makes them special. they’re not bad, just unmemorable. however, like any mediocre album, there are a few good tracks that force their surroundings to pale in comparison....

they were wrong so we drowned
every single Liars album is a complete left turn. the last thing you’d expect them to put out based on your assumptions of them as a band from listening to their last album. until you listen to the album before that one and realize that doing just that is the only accurate way to describe their “sound”. rather than frustrate the hell out of their listenership (or actually...

this one’s an anthem. The Tough Alliance - A New Chance (Juan Maclean Remix) I know nothing of the Tough Alliance but I do know that Mr. Maclean has never steered me wrong. ever. seriously. every song he releases is a slice of heaven and this is his best remix yet by far. it soars to the transcendental heights that most dance floor killers only aspire to. and I don’t even...

winter music
something about the music of Lost In the Trees makes it ideal for winter listening. I imagine myself in a cabin, sipping tea by the window, watching the snow fall. but I’m in an apt in LA and its 65 degrees. they’re based out of Chappell Hill and have something like 20 members playing any assortment of instruments from a glockenspiel to a euphonium but it never seems cluttered. it...

its good when friends of yours get it together and start to make things happen for themselves. especially when what they’re getting together is really good. I’m consistently amazed at the quality of music coming out of Non Projects, and I feel a little weird writing about them in a removed, third person kind of way, as if I didn’t personally know them but I like what...

Lindstrøm
everything the man touches turns to smooth ass cosmic disco gold. his new album with vocalist Christabelle, Real Life Is No Cool, is due to drop sometime in January on Smalltown Supersound. the first single was just released and of course it grooves hella hard. her vocals really help to ground his dancefloor workouts from spinning too far out into the stratosphere. Lindstrøm & Christabelle -...

it’s that time again. every once in a while I go through a Weezer faze. like a seriously embarrassing screaming-at-the-top-of-my-lungs-to-Tired-Of-Sex Weezer phase. I was lamenting to a friend a number of years ago about how it sucks that anything they produced after the green album is unlistenable leaving me a total of about 26 songs to enjoy when I lapse into my annual Weezer...

without Kraftwerk, 64% of the music you listen to on a regular basis would not exist. while I’m usually dubious of repackaged and rereleased remasters (no reason to shell out more money if the music’s the same….), the new Kraftwerk Catalogue is impressive as hell. they really sound incredible. it makes sense that a band that’s as synonymous with the technology they use...

ok you’ve cleared enough samples. put the album out already. Since I Left You is one of the greatest pieces of music ever composed. this sounds exaggerated but its not. it’s easily one of my favorite albums and I think what attracts me to it (other than the music obv) is the fact that it sounds like it was lovingly sculpted. they were careful to place each sound exactly where they...

make me solid gold
I’ve been obsessed with The Golden Filter since they released Solid Gold sometime last year. something about the arpeggiated bass and the glamorous sheen that every sound is slathered in, icicles hanging from every synth note. imagine my surprise when I discovered yesterday that their new single Thunderbird had been out since late september. buy the 12” (with a White Stripes cover as...

all my friends are funeral singers
Califone are touring behind lead singer Tim Rutili’s debut feature film, performing the soundtrack live in front of screenings of the movie. Tomorrow night they’re presenting it for free at the Hammer. the museum’s website with all the details. I can’t account for the artistic merits of the film, but if it’s half as engaging as Califone’s recorded output,...

essentials
our friends in the UK get Pete Tong and the essential mix once a week, while those of us across the pond get this. lucky for us, the queen herself uploads and seeds torrents of these essential mixes for our yankee listening pleasure. I’ve taken it upon myself to offer some of my (easier to find) favorites below. two hours is a lot to handle, but there are a few incredible segments in...
